"Natural Science instructor Monica Lara and Clearwater Campus student Brittany Barbara presented at the Larval Biology conference last month at the UC Berkeley Campus in California.
Lara presented on fish larvae that were collected with a special light trap on an island off the Yucatan coast. Barbara presented a poster on a study she has been conducting involving collecting plankton locally for more than two years. She is the first student working in Lara’s lab to present her work at a professional meeting of international scientists.
The results of these studies tell us more about the tiny offspring of marine animals found in ocean waters, Lara said. It is important to understand the patterns of supply and distribution of these organisms to answer questions about biology and conservation of resources.
Barbara said the conference was “an opportunity unlike anything gained in the conventional classroom.” She obtained the funding to travel to and attend the conference through the Clearwater Student Government Association by presenting a proposal and synopsis of her work to the group last year."

"Lara, along with Instructor Heyward Mathews and students, are part of a new lab conducting research in marine science at the Clearwater Campus. Other students are studying soft corals, invertebrates in sediments and some are using light traps to collect larvae in local waters.
Jessica Small, another of the students involved in this research, said the opportunity to conduct “undergraduate research is something that is not easily attainable at most universities or colleges, which is what makes me appreciate the opportunity that I am given as an undergraduate student here at SPC.”
Lara hopes many more of her students can present the results of this research at science meetings in the coming years. Barbara will present her poster and discuss her experience with students and faculty at the Clearwater Campus."
